The Archive In late April of 2002, amidst college finals season, NAASCon helped coordinate a nationwide campaign of protests and rallies against a line of racist t-shirts manufactured by Abercrombie & Fitch. This movement was planned, organized, and executed by Asian-American students across the nation- many operating literally out of their dorm room, passing up reviewing and studying for passing out flyers; putting off writing that second essay draft to send out angry letters to A&F. How do you organize a campaign of this nature? We flew by the seat of our pants most of the time, but with the swiftness of determination we were able to tap into a national network of willing helpers.
Our demands have not been met to this day, but this isn't a "loss". We've come to a realization of empowerment no stupid slur on a t-shirt could shock. We are the national network and we’re out there, ready for action.
In this archive of words and pictures, we hope to remind ourselves of what we can accomplish together: - Byung J. Lee's April 16 2002 e-mail that brought the t-shirts to our attention. - The press release we sent out in response to the situation. - Our Demands as part of the National Action Week against Abercrombie & Fitch. - Our sister website in this campaign: http://www.boycottaf.com - News Articles from around the nation.
